Tinaztepe Univerity Campus Design
Tınaztepe University Campus Design Concept
The Tınaztepe University campus in Buca, İzmir, is designed as an integrated educational and social environment that highlights the region's values and contributes to urban development. Located on the slopes of Tınaztepe overlooking İzmir Bay, the campus spans two hillsides of a valley and embraces the area's topography to create a connected, sustainable, and interactive environment.
The master plan is organized around two main intersecting pedestrian spines— the "Health Axis" and the "Growth Axis"—which form the structural and spatial backbone of the campus. These axes promote walkability, reduce reliance on private vehicles, and are designed to ensure a sense of unity across different construction phases. Along these spines are educational buildings, hospitals, social spaces, and key landmarks such as University Square, which serves as a central gathering space for events and interaction.
A previously dry stream bed is reactivated and integrated into the design, forming part of a main pedestrian promenade (allée) that connects indoor and outdoor spaces and supports campus life throughout the day. This promenade is not just a path but a vibrant corridor that merges academic, social, and ecological functions.
The campus design emphasizes flexibility, allowing for modular growth while maintaining cohesion. Open spaces are planned to accommodate diverse uses, and the landscape is designed with sustainability in mind, including edible vegetation, water-efficient planting, and biodiversity-supportive ecosystems. These efforts aim to create a lively, resilient, and environmentally responsible campus centered on health, learning, and community.
